Beinecke Scholarship

Deadline: Noon, February 8, 2010

The Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship provides $34,000: $4,000 prior to graduate study and $15,000 per year for two years of graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Eighty colleges and universities from across the U.S. (including UC Berkeley) are invited to nominate one student for a Beinecke Scholarship; twenty scholarships are awarded nationwide.

Eligibility requirements

  • Junior ("Junior" means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2010 and August 2011.)
  • U.S. citizen or U.S. national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands
  • Superior intellectual ability (typically a minimum 3.5 GPA) and personal promise Financial need (received need-based financial aid as an undergraduate)

Selection criteria

Most Beinecke recipients are at the top of their class academically and many plan to pursue careers in college teaching and/or research. The amount of an applicant's financial need will not be a major determining factor, but preference is given to candidates for whom the scholarship would enable her/him to attend graduate school.

Application requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  • A completed application form (including financial data sheet)
  • A current resume
  • A 1000-word personal statement describing background, interests, career goals, and plan for graduate study
  • Official copies of all college transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty members

The UC Berkeley selection committee will select the Universities nominee based on the above application materials and criteria.

The current year's application becomes available in the Scholarship Connection office (301 Campbell) in mid-November. However, interested students should use the previous year's application as a working guide until the current year's application is available.

All UC Berkeley Beinecke applicants should make an individual advising appointment with Alicia Hayes the Beineceke scholarship coordinator. For more information, contact Alicia Hayes.
