The Mitchell Scholarship, established in 1998, funds one year of post-bachelor research or study at any university in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. Named for Senator George J. Mitchell, the award was created to educate and inspire future American leaders about the island of Ireland. The scholarship provides tuition, accommodations, an $11,000 living stipend, travel expenses to and from the United States, and a stipend for European travel. Twelve Mitchell Scholarships are awarded to U.S. students each year.
Selectors look for candidates who have demonstrated academic distinction, leadership, and participation in extra-curricular activites; honesty, integrity, excellence, fairness, and unselfish service to others; and potential to make future significant contributions to society.
Applicants should schedule an advising appointment with Scholarship Connection staff early in the application process.
Applications must be endorsed by UC Berkeley before they can be submitted to the US-Ireland Alliance. In the endorsement process, the campus selection committee reviews application materials, conducts interviews, and selects Berkeley's nominees.
Mitchell applicants should make an individual advising appointment with Scholarship Connection staff. For more information, contact Scholarship Connection
