Rhodes Scholarship

Deadline: Summer 2010 (Please note: the campus deadline for the 2009-10 Rhodes Scholarship has passed)

The Rhodes Scholarship, one of the most competitive and prestigious awards, funds two or three years of post-bachelor study at Oxford University in Great Britain. The award covers educational and living expenses. Initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, the scholarships bring outstanding students from nineteen countries and five continents to Oxford University. Thirty-two American Rhodes Scholars are selected each year. Rhodes Scholars may pursue either a second bachelor's degree or a higher degree.

Eligibility requirements

  • U.S. citizen
  • Age 18-23 on October 1, 2009
  • Earn bachelor's degree before October 2010

Selection criteria

The selectors look for outstanding intellectual and academic achievement (typically a minimum 3.6 GPA). Applicants must also show integrity of character, interest in and concern for others, leadership ability, and the energy to fully use their talents.

Application requirements

Applicants must submit the following for the campus competition:

  • A completed application form (available from the Rhodes website in July 2009)
  • A personal statement, 1000 words or less, describing academic and other interests
  • A succinct, two-page list of principal college activities and honors
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended.
  • Five to eight letters of recommendation (at least four must be from persons with whom the applicant has done academic work at a college or university

Applicants should schedule an advising appointment with Scholarship Connection staff early in the application process.

Applications must be endorsed by UC Berkeley before they can be submitted to the Rhodes Trust. In the endorsement process, the campus selection committee reviews application materials, conducts interviews, and selects Berkeley's nominees.

Rhodes applicants should make an individual advising appointment with Scholarship Connection staff. For more information, contact Scholarship Connection
