April Joy, an ethnic studies major, is a first generation college student who entered UC Berkeley as an Incentive Awards Scholar and is currently in the UC Berkeley Biology Scholars Program. In the future, she plans to practice Internal Medicine and become the Executive Director of her own non-profit clinic in a medically underserved community. April Joy is Berkeley's first Truman scholar in three years.
Leslie Lang is a double major in business administartion and rhetoric at Berkeley. In colloboration with the Alameda County Social Services Agency, Leslie will organize a group of student volunteers to provide language interpretation services to non-English speaking immigrants. Her future plans include pursuing graduate school in development studies and the law in order to practice international human rights law.
Daniel is an urban studies major at Berkeley who has already demonstrated a great deal of accomplishment. Along with the Strauss scholarship, Daniel has recently been named a Haas Scholar, one of Berkeley;'s most prestigious awards. Daniel will establish a series of micro clinics that will work to serve the diabetic population in the West Bank. In the future, Daniel desires a career in public policy that will facilitate a "synergistic relationship" betwen Israel and Palestine.
Merage Institute for the American Dream Fellowship
Joseph,a political science major, is also recipient of the George Miller Scholarship. As one of his future endeavors, Joseph seeks to lead the reform of Americas health care system so that all Americans receive adequate health insurance. He will use the Merage stipend to support himself while interning with the California Department of Health Services and studying for a masters degree in public policy.
