McCall MacBain Scholars

The McCall MacBain Scholarship provides a fully funded master’s or second-entry professional undergraduate program at McGill University in Montréal, Canada. The scholarship covers tuition and fees for the full normal duration of the program, a living stipend of $2,000 CAD per month during academic terms, summer funding options, and a relocation grant for moving to Montréal. As part of a cohort of scholars from different fields, participants also receive leadership training and mentorship. The McCall MacBain Scholarship application deadline precedes McGill graduate admissions. You may list up to five eligible programs of interest on your scholarship application.

Note: Top applicants are also eligible to receive regional or finalist awards, ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 CAD, if not selected for the full scholarship. The regional award may be used to enroll at any public university in Canada.

This program requires a campus nomination (unless you received your undergraduate degree prior to 2021).

Prospective applicants must make an individual advising appointment with Keila Diehl, the McCall MacBain Scholarship campus representative.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the 2025 cohort, you need to meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • You are a current student on track to earn your first bachelor’s degree by August 2025
  • You earned your first bachelor’s degree in the last five years (January 2019 or later)
  • You earned your first bachelor’s degree more than five years ago, and are 30 years or younger in 2024

You also:

  • intend to apply for Fall 2025 admission to a full-time master’s or second-entry professional undergraduate program at McGill University. Programs with Summer 2025 admission only are also acceptable.
  • are proficient in English

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Exceptional Character: integrity, honesty, humility, empathy, resilience, an unwavering commitment to the pursuit of excellence and to hard work and service, continual learning and self-awareness, long attention span, perseverance, and a willingness to take meaningful risks and learn from failures.
  • Community Engagement: a track record of service: thoughtful, committed experience working for and with others to address challenges that face communities large and small, a breadth and depth of interests, evidenced by sustained involvement in extra-curricular or other activities. These activities may include mastery in the arts, athletics, or other pursuits.
  • Leadership Potential: experience working with and leading others towards a common goal, of taking on tough leadership roles to advance meaningful change, a collaborative spirit seeking to improve the lot of others and develop the potential of those they lead.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: can identify needs and gaps and motivate others in developing and implementing creative and effective solutions to address them, unafraid to forge new paths and not held back by fear of failure.
  • Academic Strength & Intellectual Curiosity: deep interest in and curiosity about people, ideas, and the world around you, an interest in and experience working with others with perspectives different from your own, a good fit between the proposed graduate program(s) and the candidate’s qualifications and plans for the future.

  • Two letters of recommendation (one academic, one community work)*
  • Four short essays
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • C.V. or resume (one page)

*If the program to which you are applying (e.g.,MBA) does not require an academic reference, then you are welcome to provide a professional (work) reference instead of an academic one.
