The Mitchell Scholarship, established in 1998, funds one year of post-bachelor research or study at any university in the Republic of Ireland. Named for Senator George J. Mitchell, the award was created to educate and inspire future American leaders about the island of Ireland. The scholarship provides tuition, accommodations, a living stipend, travel expenses to and from the United States, and a stipend for European travel. Twelve Mitchell Scholarships are awarded to U.S. students each year. Below are the requirements and criteria in order to receive campus endorsement.

Eligibility requirements

  • U.S. citizen
  • Earn a bachelor's degree before September 2020
  • Age 18-29 on September 29, 2019
  • Currently enrolled full-time undergraduate students

(Institutional endorsements ARE NOT required for recent graduates, graduate students, part-time students, or non-students. Therefore these groups ARE NOT required to submit a campus application)

Selection criteria

Selectors look for candidates who have demonstrated academic distinction, leadership, and participation in extra-curricular activities; honesty, integrity, excellence, fairness, and unselfish service to others; and potential to make future significant contributions to society.

Application requirements

Applicants MUST submit the following for the campus competition:

  • A completed online campus application form and the following:
    • Personal statement concluding with the following signed statement: (This personal statement must not exceed 1,000 words in length, and should be written in as simple and direct a manner as possible. It should be set in a typeface no smaller than 10 points)
    • List of principal college activities and honors.
    • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities and colleges you have attended
    • Four letters of recommendation (at least two must be from persons with whom the applicant has done academic work at a college or university)

Mitchell applicants should make an individual advising appointment with Alicia Hayes.

Applications for current undergraduates MUST be endorsed by UC Berkeley before they can be submitted to the U.S. Ireland Alliance. In the endorsement process, the campus selection committee reviews application materials and selects Berkeley's nominees.
