Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a 6-week summer program designed to provide undergraduates with a deeper appreciation of current issues in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. Program participants (known as “Rangel Scholars”) live at Howard University, attend classes, and participate in a variety of programs with foreign affairs professionals at Howard and at diverse locations around Washington, D.C. The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day. It also provides a stipend of $3,300.

Prospective applicants should make an individual advising appointment with Keila Diehl in the OURS National Scholarships & Experiential Fellowships Office.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • be a full-time undergraduate student, with at least sophomore status (at least 30 credit hours) on the date of the application deadline; undergraduate seniors are eligible to apply if they are enrolled full-time in the spring semester
  • have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 at the time of application
  • be a U.S. citizenNote: This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • clear interest in a career in international affairs
  • strong academic background
  • commitment to service
  • leadership
  • diverse interests in areas such as international affairs and government
  • cultural sensitivity
  • writing skills
  • ability to overcome obstacles

Application Requirements

  • Interest statement (500 words)
  • Statement of financial need (400 words)
  • Financial aid statement from the applicant’s university for the 2024-2025 academic year
  • Two letters of recommendation (one from faculty member; one from community leader)
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship
  • Transcripts from all colleges and universities
  • Proof of full-time registration for Spring 2025
