Masha Vtorushina

Masha Vtorushina (’25, Chinese Language and Global Studies) first started learning Mandarin in high school and had the opportunity to visit China, where she taught English at several schools, volunteered at a panda conservation site, and immersed herself in a new community. Eager to continue exploring, she became an exchange student at Peking University in 2024 and solo-traveled around China. Beyond academics, she is a professional athlete in the sports pole dance discipline, earning numerous champion titles, including the 2023 U.S National Professional Women’s Champion title at the world’s largest

Emma Berman

Emma Berman (‘26, Bioengineering) is inspired by the intersection of innovation, creativity, and medicine. At UC Berkeley, she is an undergraduate researcher in the Messersmith Lab (developing a regenerative drug model for inflammatory bowel disease) and instructor of the Breaking Down Bioengineering DeCal, a student-led course for Cal freshman and junior transfers exploring bioengineering. At UC San Diego, she conducts clinical research with the Facial Nerve Clinic, supports outreach as a student liaison for the Moores Cancer Center internship program, and is involved in biomedical research at the Chen lab

Seven undergrads awarded 2025 Critical Language Scholarships!

We are very pleased to announce that seven UC Berkeley students have been awarded the U.S. Government’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS), a fully-funded 8–10-week overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students at every level of language learning. The next application deadline will be in November 2025 (for summer 2026 programs). Students in any year of college are eligible to apply! Khephra Owl

Khephra Owl (’25, Educational Sciences) will be traveling to Okayama, Japan to study Japanese. She grew up watching Ghibli movies such as Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, which led her to studying various aspects of Japanese culture, such as Zen Buddhism, Shintoism, and Japanese ghost stories. In 2023, she studied abroad in Kyoto, Japan through UCEAP and discovered several stark contrasts between US and Japanese cultures, which showed her the value of learning from each other in areas such as self-expression and honoring tradition. Roxana Wang (’24) Named Berkeley’s Twentieth Schwarzman Scholar

by Lauren Miller Roxana (Qinhong) Wang, a recent graduate of the UC Berkeley class of 2024, has been awarded a 2025-26 Schwarzman Scholarship. Wang, who studied Comparative Literature and Ancient Greek and Roman Studies in the College of Letters & Science, was selected as one of 150 scholars from a pool of nearly 5,000 candidates. Eli Glickman (’25 Political Science and Public Policy) is interested in nuclear strategy and the intersection between national security and emerging technologies.
