Isaac graduated from UC Berkeley in 2019 with a BA in Political Economy. He also studied Chinese language throughout his time at Berkeley and was awarded the Huang Scholarship, through which he studied with Princeton-in-Beijing and interned at a small music and media company in Shanghai. Miyako Iwata

Miyako Iwata is a junior majoring in political science at U.C Berkeley. Miyako is ardent about getting students excited about voting. Her Strauss scholarship project, the Pac-12 Voting Challenge uses the healthy rivalries between colleges to get young people civically and politically engaged. As Miyako states, my end goal is one and the same: to make our democracy better. Miyako is a Newman Civic Fellow, a Lead Vote Everywhere Ambassador, and a Voter Registration Manager for the ASUC. She is also a Cal Alumni Leadership Scholarship recipient.

Maribel Patino : Soros Fellowship

Maribel Patino (’14, MCB, with emphasis in neurobiology) conducted her honors thesis in the lab of Prof. Daniela Kaufer studying the relationship between traumatic brain injury and epilepsy. She graduated with high distinction and was awarded the department’s I.L. Chaikoff Memorial Award. She went on to work at the University of Pennsylvania in the lab of Professor Edward B. Lee through the NIH Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program, studying the role of a repeat expansion mutation in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Saul Ramirez : Soros Fellowship

Saúl Ramirez (’16, Chicano Studies/Ethnic Studies) minored in education and global poverty and practice. His multidisciplinary undergraduate training culminated in an honors thesis that analyzed Central American unaccompanied immigrant minors’ experiences, and his legal internships during college cemented his desire to pursue law. He aspired to mitigate the immigration- and criminal-law-related consequences he witnessed his loved ones and community enduring and went on to earn his JD from Yale Law School in 2019. Mira Cheng

Mira Cheng is a junior majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology. Mira’s Strauss scholarship project, Friends of All Ages, is an after-school arts program dedicated to fostering safe, creative, and genuine relationship building between generations. The program will emphasize intergenerational dialogue, mutual respect, and creative storytelling through a variety of multimedia activities. Namrata Ramesh

Namrata is a senior at the University of California, Berkeley, pursuing a Physics (Honors) degree. Her senior thesis, supervised by Professor Naomi Ginsberg, involves understanding the dynamics of self assembly of gold nanocrystal superlattices using optical and x-ray scattering techniques. She has also worked on studying the trajectories of electrons in manganese doped halide perovskites using Monte Carlo simulations. Darion Wallace graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 2018 as a double major in rhetoric and African American Studies. Nicholas Shafer

Nicholas Shafer is a recent 2020 UCB grad in Anthropology & Near Eastern Languages and Literatures (Arabic). He was a 2019 recipient of the Boren Scholarship, a Fulbright Grant recipient, and a 2020 John Gardner Public Service Fellow. He is one of 44 Marshall Scholars that will begin study in the United Kingdom in fall 2021 and will pursue study at the University of Oxford and the University of Sussex.
